ERCS Runs Second Round Supplementary Food To Drought Affected Communities In Afar Region

Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) has distributed 19,872 kilos of supplementary food and 3204 litters of edible oil for the second time to drought affected communities of Afar region.
The distribution led by ERCS and done in collaboration with World Food Program and Disaster Prevention and Food Security Preparedness benefitted a total of 3013 drought victims.
Dunale Ahawa, 30, mother of five from Agum kebele said that her one year child was malnourished as a result of the drought.
But after I received supplementary food in the first round distribution, my child is gaining weight and it changed my family life. And now that I am here for the second time,she added.
Hawa Ali, 38 and mother of five, came from Sedomta kebele. She lost 5 of her camels and lots of goats which resulted to food shortage to the family and malnourishment to her last child. But, after receiving aid in the first distribution, my family is getting better,she noted.
ERCS Afar Regional Branch Project Coordinator, Tilahun Desalew said that the second round supplementary food and oil distribution done to 15 kebeles of Bidu woreda. It will also continue for the month of November.
Most of the beneficiaries and stakeholders engaged in the distribution appreciated the Societys leading role in emergency responses and organizing others to draw resources to address the needy.
During the first round, ERCS distributed 29.1 metric tons of supplementary food and 3240 litters of oil to 2157 children, pregnant and lactating women, and nonfood items for 2538 drought displaced communities in Bidu and Alidar woreda.
Since the time ERCS has started implementing emergency program to drought responses, more than 360,000 drought affected people benefitted in its food and non food item assistance.
